Scarf/Vest Refashion

I'm always looking for new ways to wear my favourite closet staples, so when I came across this tutorial on how to turn a scarf into a vest, I instantly pinned it. It took me awhile, but I finally got around to wearing this look out and about, and I remembered to snap a picture for you!

My Mister and I went on a great double date with another married couple to see Much Ado About Nothing at this hip little theatre in town. This scarf/vest was just what I needed to bring some interest to my otherwise bland outfit. (Tee, jeans, flip flops... can you tell it was the weekend? Hah!)

If you've seen this floating around Pinterest and haven't tried it yet, I totally recommend it! This is a great way to get a little extra wear out of your prettiest rectangular scarves.

Sweet Fellowship

Sweet Fellowship via Polyvore

A little Sunday style for all of you. This Sunday was our last home fellowship group for the summer, and I'm a little sad we're taking a break!

This may just be one of my favourite outfits. I really wanted to wear this navy dress, which was gifted to me two Christmases ago by my sisters-in-law. The only trouble is that the top is a bit revealing! I paired it with a raspberry cropped cardigan I've owned forever, and this fun bird-print scarf that I also received as a gift. Voila! Problems solved, and it looks just perfectly put-together for a Sunday afternoon.

What Makes Modest?

"Modest" fashion is something I don't think I'd heard of prior to 2012. However in the early months of last year I felt convicted to learn more about the topic. One thing led to another, and in March 2012 I made a pretty dramatic decision -- I chose to give up wearing pants and instead wear only skirts and dresses. For someone who previously only wore dresses for very special occasions, that was a big deal! But I knew there was no better way to learn about the topic than to live it.

I wound up wearing skirts for one full year, until March 2013. I even wore a skirt while hiking in the mountains! In that time I learned a lot about the modest dress movement, but the most important thing I learned is that "modest" doesn't mean the same thing for everyone. For example, plenty of modest fashionistas wear pants. Some feel comfortable showing their upper arms, while others insist on covering their arms to the elbow.

I thought it would be a good idea to start thinking through how I define modest dress. If I can put a description to the term, then I can more easily identify things that aren't aligned with my convictions and omit those things from my wardrobe. Also, it's nice to track how my definition of modest changes with time!

There are two aspects to my definition. First, in this post, I'll talk about the practical application of modest dress. Later, I'll write another post about the rationale and heart that informs these decisions.

After one year of wearing skirts, I resumed wearing pants. To be honest, it took some effort! I've learned to be selective in the cut of pants I wear, and I've turned down many options in my recent hunt for black skinny jeans because I felt they were... well, too revealing! My go-to jeans (the only pair I'm really comfortable in so far) are labeled "skinny" but instead of being spandex tight they lightly skim my legs, with a little room to spare. They're also not low-cut but instead have a more moderate waist, so I can crouch and lean over without fear.

When it comes to skirts and dresses, I prefer maxi skirts or those that fit to the knee. There's nothing like trying to sit in a skirt that's just a little too short! As an added complication, my workplace doesn't allow bare legs to be shown at any time, even in the full heat of summer. I often wear a pair of leggings under my knee-length skirts to comply, and sometimes I'll even carry that look over to the weekend.

My real struggle comes when I try to choose tops to wear. I'm rather curvy, and I'm trying to make a better effort to wear higher necklines. At the same time, I often mis-judge my size and wear t-shirts and blouses that are slightly too big. When these two things are combined, I wind up looking boxy and unfashionable! I'm learning to judge my size more accurately (with help from my Mister) without winding up in shirts that are too tight, which has been helping. (Does anyone else have these problems? I feel crazy describing this!)

This post wind up a lot longer than I wanted it to be, and even worse, there's not a single picture! Apologies for that, and I promise to return next time with a new outfit post. In the meanwhile, what do you think of when someone says "modest fashion"? I'd love to hear your definition! Leave a comment below.

Hello Kitty

Hello Kitty on Polyvore

Argh, Mondays! Sometimes I'm really excited to start the work week (weird, I know, but I'm living out my dreams in graduate school!) and sometimes... well... not so much. Today was a little bit of both. I'm still totally wiped out from our very busy weekend!

This super-soft Hello Kitty tee was just the thing I needed to brighten my mood. I just picked it up at Old Navy the other day, and I couldn't wait to wear it! I also settled on my trusty Converse which aren't shown in my action shot because, again, I'm shooting these little pics at the end of the day. I just never remember to do it in the morning! Finished it off with some easy lip balm and a little splash of pink eyeshadow, and I was off to a better start.

Isn't that purse adorable? I'm sorely in need of a new one, and it's my new favourite colour, but I think it might be the wrong size. What do you think, yes or no to big purses?

A Little Blue

A Little Blue on Polyvore

A little work-day ensemble. It was miserably gray and rainy on Thursday morning, and I absolutely did not want to go to work. Instead of sulking around in a hoodie and jeans all day, I figured this outfit would help brighten my mood. It worked like a charm!

Here I am, albeit a bit rumpled (and dark, and grainy) at the end of the day. The blouse I own is from Express. These boots are the Unisa Tiffany Riding Boot in Cognac, and I love-love-love them. Too bad it's getting so hot; this is probably the last time I'll wear them this year! The skirt is a hand-me-down from Old Navy, and the leggings are from there as well. The lapis bracelet was a gift from my mother-in-law at our wedding shower.

Alright, it's time to get dressed... and it looks like rain again today! (Yuck.) See you next time!
